In the late 60’s and early 70’s,Hair, the musical, was literally a shocking success with its iconoclastic nude scene on stage. If you remember the lyrics to the song,“Hair”, you will remember this: “…hair, flow it, show it, grow it as long as God can grow it, my hair.”

Growing up, my hair was always short. I was a swimmer and long hair just did not cut it. My hair was boy short often in a “duck tail”. I wanted to see how long my hair could get. Between college and my wedding, I grew my hair as long as possible. It was divine!

For our wedding, I used my mother’s hairstylist. To give me height under my headpiece, she cut the hair around my face short to provide lift, pin curled it and left it uncombed for the evening. Her comment was that it would be perfect in the morning. It was a mess.

For the bridal shower and the rehearsal dinner, I wore one of my wigs, which with the sweat under the wig dried to an even more horrendous mess. In the morning, I washed it and set it on hot rollers. When I went in for the final style, she was thrilled at how it had relaxed just perfectly. Little did she know!

It does not end here. Because of the “Dutch boy” cut she had done on part of my hair, it looked like a two tier cake. There was no way to get a style that would blend the two very divergent parts. My hairstylist was appalled. The only solution was to cut it all off to the shortest tier and he did! A friend of my husband just happened by as I was debating how to show/tell my husband about this radical change. He agreed to come home with me and “introduce” me to my husband. Over the years, he has gotten used to me with short hair and still complains that it will be shorter than his is some day.
