Truly what is a dream?  Is it a goal or a wish or a resolution or a vision or what?  Merriam Webster defines “dream” as:

: a series of thoughts, visions, or feelings that happen during sleep

: an idea or vision that is created in your imagination and that is not real

: something that you have wanted very much to do, be, or have for a long time.

Marcia Weider in her book, Making Your Dreams Come True, defines dream as “a fond hope or aspiration; to conceive of or devise.”

Personally, I disagree with both of these definitions.  If “dream” was just a fond hope or aspiration, then the words of Martin Luther King Jr., “I have a dream today!” would not have had the ability to move a nation.  As he said, his dream was deeply rooted in the American dream.

I believe that there is passion deeply entwined in true dreams.  The definitions above are pale against the big, bold, vibrant dreams that I want to have in my life and that I want my tribe to have in theirs.  Dr. King’s dream had that passion in it.  It also was written and spoken in such a way that all five senses were invoked.

This dream that I am re-imagining is part of the very core of my life.  I have written it out in such a way as to use all 5 senses.  I can see the landscape in and the town of Dornoch Scotland; I can hear the sounds of the water crashing on the coast line and the movement of people in town; I can smell the flowers, the grasses, the trees, and the water; I can taste the spray on my tongue as well as the pastries from the bakery;  and I feel the wind in my hair as I walk up from the beach onto the golf course.

I recorded my description with all the emotion and passion that I felt while reading those words.  When I play it back, I am there. The joy that I feel is almost overwhelming and I feel it in my core and in my bones.

Dornoch is only a piece of my life’s dream, but it is a vital step to making it all happen.  Dreaming is a journey to having your heart and soul’s desire. As each element is realized, the next one is ready and waiting to be imagined.
