Hopes and wishes are the desires that have no substance.  Dreams are so totally difference especially when you create them emotionally with all of your senses and with a plan to make them happen.

In Fairy Tales, it is the fairy godmother or the genie who can grant wishes. There are even foundations such as Make A Wish who grant wishes to very sick children.  Wishes are longings without any clear expectation that they will be granted.  The dictionary definition of “wish” is “to have a desire for (as something unattainable).  Wishes are granted by forces outside of us.

What is one thing that you have wished for that you knew would probably never happen?  You wish on everything.  You wish on birthday candles, on the point of a piece of pie eaten last, a falling start, the first star you see at night, the largest portion of a wishbone, and others.  I was always wishing for a horse of my own.  At that time, I had no idea of the up-front cost, the monthly maintenance costs, or such.  I just knew I wanted one – doesn’t every little girl?  Needless to say, when I was on my own, this moved from a wish to a dream and one that was realized.

Hopes are things that do have an expectation of receiving.  One hopes for a pay raise at evaluation time.  There can be an element of confidence that this will actually happen.  Often this is because you have historical data to back it up or others have received this and therefore, you should too.  Still, there is no substance to the hope.  It is just out there and relies on others for fulfillment.

Dreams, on the other hand, are entirely different.  Dreams can fulfill a wish, but there is so much more to them than a wish or a hope can hold.  I know you are asking yourself, well, tell me, how are dreams different?  Why would I want to dream and not just wish and hope?  Come back and I will tell you.  If you want a jump start, then Take the Dare2Dream to see videos on my 4 steps.
