Most people you know talk about their obsession with chocolate; that they would do anything for a piece of great chocolate or a great chocolate drink.  Well, for me, that obsession is with caramel.  It needs to be exceptional to say the least and in some cases, it needs to be in large quantities.

Now, I am not saying that I would go through a whole bag of excellent caramel candy.  That would be indulgent and I would probably regret it the next day as my body would tell me in a very real way.  I am sure you know what that means.

Because I love caramel so much, I use it as a definer of dessert at the restaurants I go to with friends or family.  When the dessert menu is passed, it’s really easy for me to go through the items and decide whether to do dessert or not. Is there caramel on the menu? If so, where is the caramel in the dessert?  Is it a major ingredient or is it just the drizzle on the plate?  Is there a way to get a side of caramel to go with it?  Inquiring minds want to know – I want to know.  This strategy has served me well and I have experienced some really awesome confections.

I also use caramel as a treat on a long road trip.  When I am coming or going from Los Angeles on a regular basis on Interstate 5, the longest and most boring road in the state, I know of two places to stop and get a great caramel drink.  One is the Foster’s Freeze at the Panoche Road exit.  I challenged the woman behind the counter to put enough caramel in the freeze to make a junky happy.  She took the challenge.  There was caramel syrup in the bottom of the cup, on the sides, in layers with the caramel freeze and on top.  I gave her a huge tip – this was paradise.  Unfortunately, Foster’s Freeze is not always open when I come through late at night.

So, I found McDonald’s, of all places, had an exceptional caramel freeze as well.  Again I challenged the counter person to make it special with more caramel syrup than is called for in their recipe.  He winked and added caramel to the bottom, sides and top.  It was heavenly.  McDonald’s became my go-to place when it was very late at night.

Most of us have an obsession of one sort or another.  Some are healthy and some are definitely not.  I am curious – what is your obsession?   Is it something that should still be in your life or is it time to let it go of it in order for you to realize your dream perhaps by putting that money away in a fund to make it happen.  Would someone think that Starbucks is your dream because of the amount of money you spend there?  Think about it and find out more by taking the dare.
