In my work with dreams, I have learned that in early childhood, we have an extraordinary amount of wants and dreams. At that time, we don’t know that we can’t have what we want. I remember going into the toy store and going from aisle to aisle saying, “I want this!” whatever “this” was. I so wanted a horse and had built a dream around it. I had no filters at that time.

Not only does this work with stuff, but it also works with what we want to do in our lives. Do you remember telling people what you wanted to be when you grew up? In fact, adults asked you that all the time. We would say we wanted to be an astronaut, the President, a ballerina, a singer, a dancer, a world class athlete, or whatever struck us that particular day. Here our dreams began.

So when did we lose our “wanting” voice? Children as early as pre-school will tell you that they can’t have something because it is too big, too expensive, etc. Someone has told them that very early on. It quiets the voice. This happens with what you want to be when you grow up and with what stuff you want. You may remember that I was told I shouldn’t stand up and speak in front of people, that I was too tall to be a ballerina and so forth.

Our dreams matter! While they may not be realized in exactly the manner we wanted as a child, they are important. When your dreams are tied to what matters most to you, your core values, then you have passion, energy, determination and resolve to see them realized. Our dreams should support our purpose in life. Without purpose, our dreams are meaningless and empty.

Are you a person who has aligned your work and dreams with your purpose? Are you a person who wants to realize the most extraordinary life?

Something else I have learned as a business woman is to ask for what you want. If you loved what you just read, this content is not for free. As a form of payment, I am asking you simply to comment or share this on Facebook or tweet about it on Twitter.
